When I was applying to universities in London, Oxford, New York, and Tokyo, I often wondered what the most important aspect of an application is. While I ultimately learned that there is no such thing as “the” advice, I found an aspect that has always brought me success and made everything so much easier. Let me share my foremost observation with you.

In my opinion, the answer is authenticity.

Yes, you were probably expecting more than the most basic answer found in every other brochure and YouTube video–but I honestly think this is it. From my experience, people often try to fill their applications with lofty words and ideas they think the Admissions Committee wants to see. However, in reality, that sometimes is exactly what the Committee does not want to see, because it does not truly reflect the individual, and makes the process harder for both sides.

In addition, the chances are, your efforts will be noticed and might actually hurt your application, which would be a shame. After all, admissions officers are highly-trained professionals who have dedicated their entire professional careers learning about people, their skills, qualities, and profiles. They have immense experience in reading applications, and will likely spot even the slightest details.

By contrast, being authentic gives you infinite freedom and allows you to fully show who you are, what you stand for, and what unique experiences you can bring to the table. Oftentimes, educational institutions–as well as employers–are not just looking for the candidate with the highest grades and the most internships, but for someone whose personality fits the team. By being authentic, you can show that you are not afraid of showing who you are, and present yourself in the best light possible. Everyone has their own way of expressing ideas, and I think it is beautiful to show what yours is. Simply put, being authentic really is the core of everything.

I hope this advice brings you luck, just as it did for me. For more tips, be sure to follow the Admissions Blog!
