Assessing the Challenges of Bangladeshi Migrant Workers’ Journey to Jordan

Semester

Spring 2024

For this project, the Capstone team collaborated with IFC ILO Better Work Jordan to help identify challenges faced by Bangladeshi migrant workers before departure and after arrival into Jordan. The Capstone team focused on three main areas: recruitment, grievance systems and mental health support. The team’s analysis and research is based on previous work done by SIPA Capstone teams, international frameworks, and data gathered from interviews with migrant workers in 5 garment factories in Jordan.

The report includes qualitative research regarding the normative international frameworks on international migration and national laws, particularly Jordanian Labour Laws. The team gathered information through interviews with important stakeholders in Bangladesh and Jordan, like the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), International Labour Organisation ( ILO), Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Ltd (BOESL), Embassies of Bangladesh and Jordan, Ministry of Labour in Jordan and experts in the field of international migration. Other important stakeholders interviewed include civil society organizations, gender-based violence experts and factory employers. The Capstone team's final recommendations were divided based on the three pillars of research, targeting brands, factories, embassies, government agencies, external stakeholders like BOESL, and Better Work Jordan.
