Focus Areas: Applied Econometrics and Macroeconomic Policy

Dr. Emara received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick. Upon completing her Ph.D., Dr. Emara served as a Term Assistant Professor of Economics at Barnard College, Columbia University, where she taught courses such as Economic Reasoning, Econometrics, Money and Banking, Labor Economics, and Development Economics. 

Dr. Emara has also taught at Drew University, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and Helwan University, delivering a diverse range of courses including Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Economic Fluctuations, Money and Banking, and Intermediate Macro. Additionally, she taught at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, where she instructed PEPM master’s students in Macroeconometrics and Microeconometrics. 

Her research accomplishments are widely recognized. Since January 2023, Dr. Emara has consistently ranked among IDEAS’ Top 25% authors in New Jersey (United States) for publications over the last 10 years (link to IDEAS ranking). Her current research program spans four key areas of economic inquiry suitable for peer-reviewed publication: (1) the impact of distance learning and digitization on educational and economic outcomes, including enrollment trends post-COVID-19 and the asymmetric effects of digitization on inflation and remittances; (2) financial inclusion and its intersection with informal sectors, economic growth, and poverty reduction, with a focus on MENA and sub-Saharan Africa; (3) the role of telecommunications and fintech in driving economic development, including sectoral analyses of capital formation and mobile technology’s economic impact; and (4) the interplay between governance, economic freedom, and financial systems in advancing sustainable development and improving economic performance across regions.
