Jump Starting the Energy Sector of Kosovo to Sustainability
This project seeks to address the challenges of Republic of Kosovo's high energy intensity and emissions by improving energy efficiency and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy, in effect “jump starting” an energy transition from lignite to renewable. To do this end, a three-part approach was taken which included: (1) conducting research on energy efficiency schemes and appliance subsidies; (2) developing a model to be adapted and adopted to incentivize behavioral change; and (3) reviewing the draft Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Law supporting the energy transition toward renewable resources. These measures seek to reduce energy supply needs and import dependency, ease the financial burden on citizens and businesses, and reduce GHG emissions and air pollution. Thus, this project will also help the government of Kosovo to achieve its climate commitments and goals of a less energy-intensive, as well as create a healthier environment, and a more informed community. The research conducted and policies developed will provide Kosovo with a best practices approach to energy efficiency that can be used to inform and guide future policy decisions.
