Mapping Community Interests in Infrastructure Development in Punta Colonet, Mexico
A team of four graduate students were charged with compiling a consultancy project for the Project on Development, Education and Research (PODER), a non-profit organization based in Mexico City. The purpose of the report is two-fold, (1) to update the research on the status of the port and provide insight into the gaps in the decision-making process for major infrastructure projects in Mexico (2) offer analysis and best practice examples of how community members and civil society can sustainably participate in the decision-making process, share economic benefits of the project, and how PODER can facilitate community building and responsible development in the region.
The report is the product of two field trips, one in January to Mexico City, where high-level political entities and relevant private sector actors were interviewed to discuss their views on the project, and one in March where local leaders, landowners, politicians, and civil society stakeholders in this project were interviewed to understand the economic, labor, environmental, and accountability concerns regarding the project.
