Message Regarding Columbia's Leadership Transition

Posted Aug 15 2024

Dear SIPA Community:

I write following the news we all received last night regarding transitions in our University leadership. I join my colleagues in thanking President Shafik for her service to the University throughout this extremely difficult past year and in wishing her well in what she takes on next, advising the UK’s Foreign Office and chairing a review of the government’s approach to international development. We at SIPA look forward to following her impact in this work.

In addition, I welcome Dr. Katrina Armstrong’s appointment as interim president at this critical time for our institution. President Armstrong and I have worked closely together throughout the last two years. Her stewardship of Columbia University Irving Medical Center – and her dedication throughout her career as a humanist, a scientist, and a physician to her patients – make her the right leader for Columbia at this moment. All of us at SIPA are fully committed to supporting her success.

In periods of transition, it is vital that we stay focused on SIPA’s mission, which is more important than ever. I have never felt more confident in our capacity to train the next generation of leaders, to drive impact, and to advance research aimed at addressing our world’s most pressing challenges. Together, and with deep and shared commitment, we move forward with this essential work. I will be writing again soon to share more on the exciting year ahead.

My very best,

Keren Signature
