Foreign Direct Investment in Sierra Leone's Agriculture Sector: Issues and Opportunities

While foreign direct investment (FDI) in natural resources has served as a multi-faceted conflict driver, it offers many positive benefits to foster sustainable development and to enhance social capacities for peace dividends. Thus, as Sierra Leone shifts from post-conflict reconstruction to a long-term development strategy, the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) has made attracting FDI in natural resources a central element in the nation’s development strategy. As part of the overall strategy to attract sustainable inflows of FDI, the GoSL has made it a priority to attract more FDI in its agricultural sector. This report aims to answer the following questions: 1) What is the impact of FDI in large-scale agriculture on communities in Sierra Leone? 2) How can one mitigate the conflict potential of FDI in large-scale agriculture?
