More Effective School Management Committees in Ghana
Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organization leading the fight to end the devastating impact of corruption on men, women and children around the world. TI’s research and advocacy has expanded recently to include corruption issues prevalent in key sectors such as education. In Ghana, decentralization of the education system after the 1992 amendment of the Constitution led to a delegation of authority to manage schools to districts and local communities. Having an active school management committee is the first step toward improving schools. However, there is great variation among schools, in terms of participation of parents and communities. Therefore, a team of SIPA students conducted a study of various initiatives to promote parental involvement in primary and secondary schools.
