Spring 2011

The Dominican-Haitian Chamber of Commerce, a bi-national trade and cultural exchange promotion organization, has been exploring opportunities with Dominican and Haitian businesses and the Haitian government to expand the market in Haiti for cooking stoves that use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The organizaion was also interested in making contribution to the country's reforestation efforts. The SIPA workshop team conducted a feasiblity study on its proposed LPG stove and reforestation initiative for Haiti, which included (1) initial mapping of the various clean energy and reforestation programs already in the planning or implementation stages in Haiti; (2) market research on potential consumer segments, affordability and pricing, and potential financing options (including microcredit, installment payment and subsidy schemes) for LPG stoves, as well as lessons that can be learned from the Dominican Republic’s experience in introducing LPG stoves and in reforestation; and (3) recommendations for potential linkages with reforestation and environmental awareness programs in Haiti.
