Promoting Social Dialogue in the Mining Sector in Pará, Brazil

The Instituto Observatorio Social (IOS) conducts research on and monitors the compliance of multinational companies with labor and environmental standards in Brazil.  It currently monitors the activities of over 50 major multinational companies in Brazil. The Centro de Estudos das Negociações Internacionais (CAENI) conducts research on negotiations in different areas, from industrial relations to international trade bargaining in comparative perspective. Mining operations in Brazil raise a range of social and environmental concerns, particularly as they expand in the recent climate of booming global commodity prices.  The objective of the workshop was to research the feasibility of a multi‐stakeholder engagement or social dialogue, by studying and analyzing the aluminum value chain and performing a stakeholder mapping in the affected areas. The team conducted a stakeholder mapping, followed by an analysis based upon relations between stakeholders, looking at challenges and opportunities derived from those relationships.
