Public Private Partnerships Benchmarking Analysis

Semester

Spring 2016

World Food Program USA (WFP USA) leads efforts in the U.S. to build and leverage private sector partnerships to carry out its mission to fight hunger across the globe. WFP USA requested the SIPA Capstone team to conduct research, including a review of its corporate partners, to determine what partnership models are most mutually successful, as well as to provide insights on best practices in building strong partnerships with corporations, foundations and other private sector supporters. The overarching objective was to better understand what works well, and what doesn't, from both the nonprofit and corporate perspective.

Using client provided data and materials, an extensive literature review of publicly available information from academic, consultancy and company resources, and raw data collected through interviews with 12 companies partnering with WFP USA (6 current, 2 former, 4 potential), the team produced the four deliverables listed below. Partners interviewed included UPS, Cargill, and Ingredion.

  • Trend Report: A trend analysis of WFP USA’s current, former, and potential corporate partnerships.

  • Engagement Matrix: A tracking tool monitoring the performance of WFP USA’s current, former, and potential corporate partnerships across key areas and against key indicators for data-driven decision-making.

  • Evaluation Framework: Two surveys to be used as: (i) an annual check-in for current partners; and (ii) an exit interview for ending partnerships.

  • Best Practices Report: A report on best practices for establishing and managing public private partnerships. The report also highlighted key aspects of successful partnerships and provided recommendations for WFP USA to use as they engage with partners moving forward.
