Sustainable Development in Post-Conflict South Sudan

Advisor

Semester

Fall 2014

Following the political crisis in South Sudan late last year, the International Growth Center (IGC) had halted its operations in South Sudan. It thus asked our Capstone team to provide an analysis of the situation in South Sudan, so as suggest a strategic set of advisory interventions for the new South Sudanese government and priorities for the international community, once a measure of peace and security had been restored in the country.

The team conducted a review of the current academic, scholarly and policy literature, coupled with an examination of case-studies and best-practices in conflict-recovery and development of fragile states. Applying this analysis to the specific situation in South Sudan, the team’s report puts forward immediate priorities and important short-term actions in the core areas of human security, economic stimulation and governance which are needed to establish a robust and sustainable basis for future growth and development in South Sudan. It also identifies key medium and longer-term trends that bear close watching. The report concludes with a comprehensive matrix of action-oriented policy recommendations for the short and medium-term.
