Understanding the Impact of Locally Driven, Public Interest Journalism Across the Globe
The Report for the World (RFW) program positions local journalists in salaried reporting roles, focusing on critical issues such as climate change, corruption, health, and education. The program aims to understand the impact of locally driven, public interest journalism on a global scale, seeking to enhance audience engagement and ensure the sustainability and economic viability of its newsroom partners and journalists.
RFW tasked the Columbia Capstone team to evaluate the impact of local journalists' consistent reporting on critical beats across individual, network, and institutional dimensions. This analysis focused on several key factors: enhanced coverage consistency, career advancement for journalists, heightened audience engagement, increased accountability, and improved collaboration within the media landscape. The overarching objective was to assist RFW's newsroom partners in developing a structured approach to integrating story impact goals throughout their operational processes, from planning to publication.
The assessment leveraged case studies from 45 journalists across 32 newsrooms in 20 countries, provided by RFW. The team collected responses from at least 15 reporters and editors, performed an initial analysis of the stories to evaluate various impact aspects as specified in the project goals, and conducted follow-up interviews with reporters and newsrooms to acquire additional data and narrative elements. Further, interviews with relevant experts were conducted to identify opportunities, constraints, and practical applications of the research findings. Each case study was scrutinized using an impact assessment matrix, leading to the drafting of a comprehensive report that encapsulates the findings and insights from key informant interviews. The final report delineated specific main findings, offered recommendations, and outlined best practices for RFW to incorporate story impact objectives into their workflows, enriched by multimedia narrative case studies.
