Tuition Structure for MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP

Tuition Structure for MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP

Credit Registration Cap

As of fall 2026, SIPA allows MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP students to register for up to 16.5 credits per semester. This cap ensures students can meet degree requirements while maintaining academic quality and allowing flexibility for exploration. This applies to all students registered in fall 2026 and after, regardless of their start date.

Purpose of the Credit Cap

SIPA recommends a balanced course load of 12–15 credits per semester for academic success. The 16.5-credit cap:

  • Encourages a healthy balance between coursework, career planning and personal well-being
  • Discourages seat-holding in courses that students then drop, which blocks other students from enrolling
  • Allows students to perform at a high level in all courses

Meeting Degree Requirements

Students can fulfill the 54-credit degree requirement by taking an average of 13.5 credits per semester. The 16.5-credit cap provides room for one additional three-credit course each term. With nine elective credits available for an optional minor, students can take up to 21 credits beyond degree requirements—offering substantial flexibility to explore academic interests within SIPA and across Columbia University.

Exceptions

In specific cases, students may request approval to register for up to 18 credits when pedagogically justified, such as:

  • Fulfilling foreign language requirements
  • Dual-degree students needing to complete additional requirements

Students wishing to request such an exception must first discuss their academic goals with their OSA advising dean. Requests are then reviewed by the dean of students and the senior associate dean for academic affairs. If approved, the additional 1.5 credits will not incur extra charges. Credits beyond 18 will be charged at the per-credit tuition rate.
